Step 5: Interview Tips for Personal Assistants
Here are my tips for a personal assistant interview:
Smart Casual Attire (Or Business Casual, Depending on the Client)
I'd say the best attire for a personal assistant interview is smart casual. It's not a corporate interview; you don't need a blazer, but you also want to make sure you're looking clean, polished, and presentable.
Confirm Clear Sound/Video
You also want to make sure you're in a well-lit space. I've interviewed a lot of personal assistants, and they're in a very dark room. If I can't see your face in these very personal positions, then it's hard to make that same connection. Test your Wi-Fi in advance, test the link in advance if you can, and make sure that you're going to be able to be seen and heard.
Prepare Examples of How You Can Help
Of course, you've reviewed the job description before you're in the interview, but think about specific ways you can help this client. In the interview, you want to be able to clearly show them how you're going to be able to come in, keep them organized, and keep them on track. If the client feels confident that you just know what you're doing, even if it's your first personal assistant job, you're going to be much more likely to get the job. Generally, the less hands-on they have to be, the better for them. They're busy people.
Get a Clear Picture of the Role and the Client’s Work Style
You want to ask questions that will help you understand how the client works. Ask them how often they like to be updated, if they have any other programs or platforms that they currently use, if they're texters, emailers, or whether they want a weekly meeting each week. Find out what it would look like to work with this specific client on a week-to-week basis.
